A classic course with a long history
Jakarta Golf Club traces its organisation to Batavia Golf Club, founded in 1872. It now occupies a compact 36-hectare site in Rawamangun, East Jakarta. The mature trees and traditional parkland setting give the round a different rhythm from a wide, modern resort course: a useful position for the next shot can matter more than a few extra metres from the tee.
Club founding and the present course
The club’s official history dates the move to Rawamangun to 1934 and the adoption of the Jakarta Golf Club name to 1950. The original Sasak Tour guide and some course histories use 1937 for the present layout and credit Tom Simpson. These dates describe different stages of the club and course; 1872 is the founding year, not the construction date of the current 18 holes.
Layout, tees and shot choices
The original guide describes four par 3s, eleven par 4s and three par 5s, for a total par of 71. With so many par 4s, keeping the tee shot in play and leaving a comfortable iron distance is central to the round. Tee colours and published distance units differ across scorecards, so select tees using the club’s current card and your reliable carry distance.
Holes highlighted in the original guide
The source singles out the par-4 second hole for a careful tee shot and water-aware planning, and the par-5 seventh for the choice between a more aggressive advance and a controlled three-shot route. Ask the caddie for the day’s safe landing areas and relevant carry distances rather than treating the archive photographs as a current yardage book.
Playing strategy for different golfers
Stronger players can plan shape and placement around the trees instead of trying to overpower every hole. Mid-handicap golfers are likely to benefit from prioritising fairways and leaving a familiar approach distance. Newer players should choose suitable forward tees and return safely to the fairway when a recovery shot would otherwise require too much risk.
Turf, practice and clubhouse
The original guide lists Tifway 419 Bermuda fairways and Tifdwarf Bermuda greens. Actual speed and playing conditions depend on weather and maintenance. It also describes a driving range, putting green, restaurant, golf shop and meeting or VIP spaces. Confirm access to any particular facility and check aeration or maintenance plans for your date.
Getting there and planning a visit
